Whisper of the Heart
I had the pleasure of receiving this movie, written by the famed Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki, for my birthday. I’m a huge fan of the movies he’s directed, especially Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Castle in the Sky. In fact, they’re all hugely enjoyable, with wonderful writing and stunning visuals. Whisper of the Heart in particular is a showcase of true writing talent. It’s a very writerly movie, being about a young girl, the little dramas of her life, and her dream of becoming a writer. The story is told with grace and tenderness and provides a wonderful portrait of junior-high school life with all its near-Shakespearean drama. Writers and anime fans, I highly recommend Whisper of the Heart — watch it today and you’ll feel touched and inspired!
