I’ve Been Flame Bait!
Because I maintain a blog not filled with highly controversial ideas (*gasp* keep two writers’ notebooks!), I have received virtually no aggressively critical comments. My commentors are always thoughtful and often complimentary (thank you readers! Keep commenting!), so I’ve been sheltered from the harsh world commenting can be. I’ve now been assigned to the politics and world news of my one blogging job at The Campus Word, meaning I have to write very opinionated, politically charged articles. I’m sure that will invite a little more controversy. But at my other blogging job, On the Record, I recently received a very harsh and critical comment on a casual post I made. I made couple mistakes of language — calling a newspaper a magazine and calling someone a senior, though he graduated last month — and I was rudely called out. I reacted a little over-sensitively at first, feeling hurt and a little shaken, but in reality, blogging is casual for me — it’s not like my creative writing was lambasted — and I should have been more careful with my word choice. So it was a useful reminder for me to shape up and fly right! It’s good to be checked every now and then.
